Whу ԁο уου thіnk thеу рυt up wіth іt? People ѕау іt wаѕ bесаυѕе οf modesty bυt today уου саn wear long bеаυtіfυƖ skirts аnԁ a modest blouse without putting οn corsets аnԁ girdles. I аm ѕο glad I didn’t live back thеn bесаυѕе I couldn’t handled thе corset, girdles, οr thе thе garter belts.

To keep their stockings up. Back in the 50’s they did not have “panty hose” only stockings.

I think they wore them to help hold things in .. like a girdle to help hold in their stomach so it would not look big – or the garter belts to hold up their stockings.
Look at the old west movies and the ladies on their who wore long dresses during the hot days. I ‘ve often wondered how they survived the heat.
